Lightspeed invests in a new high volume production scanning solution from Kodak Alaris saving money while broadening services offered to customers

Kodak Alaris announces today that Lightspeed, a Kefron Group company, has upgraded the scanner equipment used in its service bureau to support year on year business growth and enable the delivery of value added information management services for customers.

Lightspeed has invested in a high volume Kodak i5600 scanner and Kodak Capture Pro software solution, along with service and support delivering fast break/fix response times.

Andy Forward, Lightspeed’s UK commercial manager, explains, “The investment in Kodak Alaris solutions allows us to broaden our portfolio to offer customers additional BPO1 type services such as digital mailroom solutions, hosting and data extraction. This expansion in service offering gives us the ability to consolidate infrastructure whilst increasing processing throughput to boost efficiency, such is the performance of the equipment.”

Founded in 1999 and today employing 18 staff, Lightspeed is a medium-sized scanning bureau based in Reading, processing images for a range of commercial customers in various sectors, including pharmaceutical, manufacturing and financial.

With its existing scanning equipment end of life after seven years of use, Lightspeed considered a variety of vendors and selected Kodak Alaris because of the comprehensive and cost effective package offered, technical capability of the hardware and software, and compelling total cost of ownership benefits.

High performance yet cost effective to run

Kodak i5600 Scanners are designed to perform at rated speeds without any processing lag even if all imaging features switched on and output resolution is 300 dpi. With no daily volume limits or click charges, each scanner can process 170 pages or 680 images per minute in dual stream.

Kodak i5600 Scanners support Intelligent Document Recognition and come with Perfect Page imaging technology built in. This offers 30 features to enhance bureau operator productivity such as auto de-skew and rotation, streak and hole punch removal and blank page deletion.

Forward says, ”We’re capturing a greater variety of documents first time whether that’s HR or accounts payable related paperwork or just simple staff expense sheets, with Kodak Alaris’ iThresholding capability meaning you don’t have to adjust settings per document type.”

The costs of consumables like rubber rollers were another key factor in the selection. Over a five-year period, Kodak Alaris i5000 Series Scanners typically cost around £6,000 to run compared to £35,000 of non-Kodak comparative products – that’s almost six times cheaper2.

Once documents for clients are scanned and indexed, images are either hosted on Lightspeed’s cloud-based Enterprise Content Management system, which offers simple and secure access to the information, or data transferred to clients’ own IT systems via FTP.

Steven Keating, Kodak Alaris’ UK sales manager for document capture says, “If professional users like service bureaus are to meet their SLA commitments to their customers, they need scanning software and hardware which is simple to install, easy to use, robust and which produces quality images day in, day out irrespective of the document type. That’s what our technology provides.”
